Pre-Season Training

Welcome to the Back Roads Outdoors blog. We hope you will enjoy the outdoor webisodes we will be periodically posting. We will be traveling the Southeast this upcoming hunting season attempting to capture exciting hunts on video. This first episode will not be as exciting as the ones to come but we hope that it will give you an idea of our future productions. So please, tell your friends to check us out regularly to see what we’ll post next. Feel free to add comments with your feed back. We will cherish the input from all of our viewers so that our productions will continue to improve.

“Training Day” is an episode we filmed in Chambers County Alabama. We took the cameras along to get a glimpse into what some of the pre-season training is like for waterfowl dogs. It is tough getting up before dawn in August when hunting season seems like it will never come. We try to make sure the dogs are back in shape for the upcoming season and begin to re-polish their marking abilities. Knocking the rust off now will pay off when the temperatures drop and the birds are committed!

To say that John loves the outdoors would be a tremendous understatement. Its more than a hobby for him, its a way of life. John grew up hunting the northeastern part of Georgia with his dad. It all started at a very young age for John. In fact, John was too young to carry his own gun for the first several years he went with his dad. However, with each trip to the hunting club, John learned more about the sport and started having a life long love affair with the outdoors. While John started off primarily hunting whitetail deer, this lead to to his interest off hunting other wild game such as ducks, turkey, and dove.
Fishing is another sport that John loves. It all started with a bobber, hook, and bucket of crickets on the banks and boat docks of Lake Lanier.
After high school graduation, John headed over to the great state of Alabama to attend Auburn University. It was freshman year while going through pledgeship that John met great friend and hunting buddy, Clayton McKinnon. It was their similar personalities and love for the outdoors that brought them where they are today.
John currently lives in Birmingham, AL with his wife Stacy, and son Will. When John is not hunting or fishing, he enjoys spending time with his family, friends.

About Clayton

Clayton McKinnon
Auburn, AL

Clayton grew up outside of Birmingham, AL. In his family not only was hunting the favorite pastime, it was a way to spend quality time together. From ringnecks and quail on the farms of south Georgia to whitetails, turkey, and wood ducks in south Alabama, Clayton quickly developed a passion for the outdoors. Like John, Clayton attributes his passion to his dad who rarely went hunting without Clayton taggin along. While in college at Auburn University, Clayton became great friends with John and also focused his passion on waterfowl hunting. Over time Clayton has worked hard and continues to develop his duck hunting knowledge. Part of that knowledge also involves retriever training which is another one of Clayton's passions. Millie is Clayton's black lab of 4 years old and will be featured on many of the waterfowl episodes of Back Roads Outdoors. After college at Auburn, Clayton remianed in Auburn and is maried to his college sweetheart Shealy. When he's not hunting, Clayton cherishes his time spent with Shealy and their 2 year old daughter Kate who is already showing great hunting potential!
